So long Tony Lovelock Brown – a distinguished Alpharian Musician

Tony – the elder statesman, combining soloist gigs and writing about his early years

Anthony Lovelock Brown, husband, father of four, jazz musician and writer, slipped quietly away with his family around his bed at the Central Middlesex Hospital, London, just hours before his 75th birthday on 28th of November. Formal tributes will undoubtedly come later, but it seems important that his extended family of Alpha Boys’ School and Jamaican and UK jazz musicians know of his passing. A hardworking and disciplined yet warm-hearted man, Tony came from the stable of scores of successful musicians from Alpha Boys’ School. Music was his life, and playing it well was his passion. In recent years he had also turned to writing about his early life.

He has been a staunched supporter of the UK-based charity, the Alpha Boys’ Association (for Poor and Disadvantaged Children) that actively sought to promote and sponsor work in Jamaica in relation to disadvantaged, disabled and disaffected youths. He will be missed, but we, his fellow Alpherians, will always treasure his memory and the support he had given us over the years. Our condolences go to his wife, Gilda, and to his children Helen, Judie, Anthony and Alistair. May he rest in peace.
